Evendale Recreation Commission
August 16, 2007
Meeting called to order at 7:37am
Recognition of visitors: none
Roll Call: David Nichols, Michele Gottschlich, Doug Lohmeier, Wayne Mosley, Pam Meyers, Mary Lou Isaac, Gus Janszen. Absent: Grace Ficke.
Motion to approve June minutes made by Mary Lou Isaac; seconded by Doug Lohmeier. Motion approved.
Additions to the agenda: none
New Business:
a. Dance Cincinnati’s request to rent the gym on three dates in 2008.
- Request by resident conflicts with one date and a potential department program conflicts with another date.
- Motion to deny this request because of the conflicts made by Doug Lohmeier; seconded by Wayne Mosley. Motion approved.
- Commission would entertain the request for other dates in 2008.
Old Business:
a. Tri-Health Reports
- Tri-Health has been doing a very good job at managing the facility and coordinating the fitness classes. The company has the resource base for staffing, instructors and program variety. From a risk management standpoint, having Tri-Heath staff most operational hours is the prudent thing to do rather than no staff at all or the village hiring staff people.
- A request was made to offer Beginner Pilates again in the winter session.
- A request was made to purchase a larger seat for the upright bike in the fitness center.
- Kathy McGrath may return on a limited basis; thus Tri-Health will hire a new manager for the Evendale Fitness Center. Rick Hasler, from Tri-Health, and the new manager will be at the September Recreation Commission meeting.
b. Swim Safe Pool Management
- The pool facility looked great this year, and the new Funbrellas are working out well.
- Usage of the new grills at the pool is growing.
- Cary Belyea, owner of Swim Safe, will be at our meeting in September to give a full report on the 2007 swim season.
Director’s Report:
a. Congratulations to the swim team from the Recreation Commission on the team’s 2007 NSSL Championship title.
- The weather was terrific (not too hot, not too humid, and no rain).
- The parent volunteers were great; everything went smoothly. The swim team parents’ board received a resolution of thanks at the last council meeting.
- The level of swimmer development during the season, let alone over their years on the swim team, is phenomenal. Many swimmers improved their swim times during the course of this season.
- Dave Bergan will not be back as head coach in 2008. He is the new assistant principal at Mason Middle School. Commission congratulations Dave on his new position, and thanks him for all of his contributions to the Evendale Swim Team program.
b. Fun in the Sun Summer Camp went well this year. Today, the Overtime camp travels to The Beach Water Park; which closes our summer camp season.
c. The soccer trainer starts next week. Housing has been arranged (in Evendale) for five of the scheduled ten weeks. (The Indian Hill Community will house the trainer for the other five weeks.)
d. The Phi Lambda Pi trip to Myrtle Beach went well, but Saturday evening Grace Ficke was accidentally injured in a water balloon game. Grace, and Program Supervisor Kim Pielage, flew home the next morning; everyone else returned on the bus Sunday evening. Grace is expected to fully recover from the injury.
Phi Lambda Report
- As noted in the packets.
- Everyone on commission wishes Grace a full and speedy recovery.
Open Discussion:
a. Coaches’ Appreciation Dinner/Pool Party was great last night. Kristen did a wonderful job.
b. Sandra Murphy recently took Wayne on a tour of the Gorman Heritage Farm. Wayne was pleasantly surprised to see the progress of the farms’ trail system. Many things seemed to have been completed this year including the bridge to the children’s farm. The upper meadow had been recently mowed and directional signage had been added. A third trail has been added to the upper shelter. The mess at the Carpenter’s View entrance is being cleaned up.
c. In the prospective 2008 budget, Dave has planned for directional signs for the village road section of the trail system.
d. Mary Lou recently walked the Anderson Trail. During her hour on the trail she passed a minimum of 50 people of various ages. Paving trails adds benefits to any trail system. Hopefully, the farm will consider a compromise on some type of surface for the trails.
e. Soccer field #2 needs to be addressed soon; the clumps of grass and the cracks in the dirt may become a safety hazard for players. Dave stated Public Works is budgeting for irrigation on that field, and field #1, in 2008.
f. Tennis Courts
- The leaves are falling on the tennis court; please add the removal of the leaves to our personnel’s list of regular duties.
- The sprinklers are creating puddles in the corners where balls roll off the courts. Can the timer be changed so the system waters earlier allowing the puddles to dry up before tennis starts in the morning? The issue has been addressed to Public Works.
Motion to adjourn made at 8:34am by Doug Lohmeier; seconded by Gus Janszen. Motion approved.
Note: Doug, Gus, and Dave met as a subcommittee to discuss the department’s 2008 budget.
